The Midgett Realty Celebrates 50 Years on Hatteras Island

HomeThe Midgett Realty Celebrates 50 Years on Hatteras Island

The Midgett family has called the sandy shores of Hatteras Island their home for at least 3 centuries and proudly shares the history and heritage of this barrier island. The Midgett name has been serving Hatteras Island and this tight-knit community for over a century, in a variety of ways. They have been fishermen, lifesavers, surfmen, the operators of the famous Manteo—Hatteras Bus Line, played a role in establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and so much more. The Midgett family is very proud of their strong island roots.

Anderson and Stockton Midgett, with their brother Harold, began the Manteo—Hatteras Bus Line In 1938, at the young ages of 17 and 13. This bus line became an essential part of daily life on Hatteras Island. The Manteo-Hatteras bus line transported visitors down the beaches before there were roads on the island, and it helped deliver mail and daily newspapers. Anderson and Stockton Midgett were also a part of establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on January 12, 1953. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore was America’s first national seashore park, and is now one of the top destinations for family vacations across the United States.

In the 1960’s the Midgett brothers started a Hatteras Island real estate business, Midgett Realty, and today, they are the owners of the Island’s premier, full-service real estate company. Later, Midgett Realty started to focus on vacation rentals as well, and today, their children, grandchildren, and the other well-trained staff of Midgett Realty offer over 500 Hatteras vacation cottages and condos for rent. As the only Hatteras real estate and vacation rental company owned and operated by Island Natives, Midgett Realty is also one of the island’s oldest family-owned businesses. Anderson and Stockton Midgett paved the way for the hospitality and tourism industry that has flourished on Hatteras Island for many years. Once people experienced the pristine beaches, world-class fishing, and natural beauty that Hatteras Island has to offer, they started coming back year after year.

We have been honored to share our 50th year in business with all of our guests this year! We are looking forward to many more milestones for Midgett Realty and can’t wait to share our journey with you. Many thanks to all of our guests, employees, and people in our community who have made our journey such a memorable one thus far.
